The summer crowds have thinned, the temperatures are comfortable, and the canals, cobbled lanes, and medieval facades take on a warmth in September and October that they simply do not have at any other time of year. The light is lower, the mornings are quiet, and there is a sense of the city settling back into its own pace. Here are the best walking routes to build your visit around.<\/p><h2>In the City<\/h2><h3>The Historic Centre Heritage Walk<\/h3><p>Start at the Markt, where the Belfry dominates the square and the guildhalls glow in the morning light. The Wednesday market runs until 1pm and is worth timing your walk around. From the Markt, head to the Burg, where the Gothic Town Hall and the Basilica of the Holy Blood sit side by side. The Basilica is free to enter and takes twenty minutes but stays with you much longer. Follow the canal south towards the Dijver and Rozenhoedkaai, the most photographed canal junction in the city, before turning towards the Church of Our Lady. The whole route takes around two hours at an unhurried pace and is best done early.<\/p><h3>The Minnewater and Begijnhof Loop<\/h3><p>Head south from the city centre through the quieter residential streets towards Minnewaterpark, the lake-side green space known as the Lake of Love. In September and October the park has a beautiful quietness to it, with the first leaves beginning to turn and the lake reflecting the sky. From there, a short walk brings you to the Begijnhof, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most tranquil places in Belgium. The walled enclosure with its whitewashed houses and courtyard garden is at its very best on a quiet autumn morning before the tour groups arrive. The round trip from the centre takes around 90 minutes.<\/p><h3>The Canal Ring Walk<\/h3><p>For a longer city walk, the ring of waterways encircling the historic centre is one of the finest urban routes in Belgium. The full circuit is around eight kilometres and takes two to three hours, passing through neighbourhood atmospheres the typical visitor never reaches. The northern and eastern sections near the Kruispoort city gate are particularly lovely in early autumn, with the canal trees beginning to turn. The historic windmills along the eastern ramparts make a memorable halfway stop.<\/p><h2>Beyond the City<\/h2><h3>The Canal Walk to Damme<\/h3><p>The poplar-lined canal path from Bruges to the village of Damme is at its very best in early autumn, with the trees turning gold and the flat polder landscape stretching out on either side. The route follows the Damse Vaart for around seven kilometres, and Damme itself has a windmill, a handsome market square, and good cafes for a morning stop. The full return journey is around fourteen kilometres and takes three to four hours. One of those walks where the journey is entirely the point.<\/p><h3>The Three Castles Route<\/h3><p>The Three Castles Route south of Bruges is a genuinely excellent half-day walk that most visitors never discover. The circular route of around thirteen kilometres passes through the castle forests of Tillegem, Tudor, and Beisbroek, with wide forested paths, open meadows, and a natural landscape that contrasts beautifully with the historic centre. Early autumn is the best time to walk it, with the canopy beginning to change colour and the paths largely your own.<\/p><h3>Bulskampveld Landscape Park<\/h3><p>A short drive east of Bruges, Bulskampveld Landscape Park has more than 150 kilometres of marked walking paths through deciduous woodland, heathland, and meadows, with a visitor centre at the castle domain in the middle. Early autumn is when the woodland colour is at its most dramatic and the park is quiet enough to feel genuinely unhurried.
